Duane Robert MerrittOctober 25, 1934 - February 10, 2010
Duane Robert Merritt, formerly of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Fort Pierce, Florida went to be with our lord on February 10, 2010, at the age of 75. Duane is survived and will be missed by his son and daughter–in-law, Mark and Leslee Merritt of Canyon Lake, Texas, his daughter, Dr. Brenda Merritt of Halifax, Nova Scotia, his son, Dr. Paul Merritt of Greenville, South Carolina, his grandchildren, Laura Merritt Degutis and her husband Tyler, Shelby Merritt and Jakob Merritt of Texas. He leaves behind his ex-wife and friend, Sue Seitz of Canyon Lake, Texas. He is also survived by his brothers, Edwin “Hap” Merritt of Fort Pierce, Florida, William “Billy” Merritt of Fort. Pierce, Florida, and Alan Merritt of Fort Pierce, Florida. He leaves behind his loving sisters, Charlene Carver of West Virginia, Janice Draper of DeBary, Florida, and Katherine Merritt of Maine. He was preceded in death by his brother Gary Merritt of Fort Pierce, Florida. Duane was born October 25, 1934 to Sherman Merritt and Margaret Martin Merritt in Fort Pierce, Florida. He grew up in Fort Pierce and studied mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech before moving to Colorado Springs where he was stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs as a member of the 21st Engineer Battalion. He owned and operated Merritt Engineering for more than 20 years in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was instrumental in establishing the Pikes Peak chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). Duane loved engineering and the friends he worked with everyday. He also had a passion for car racing. He was associated with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and loved his memories of racing up the mountain. Funeral InformationA graveside service and burial is being planned for White City Cemetery in Florida by Yates Funeral Home & Crematory. A memorial service is being planned at the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church in Canyon Lake, Texas. Donations Information
